1999 Château Corbin Michotte

TASTING NOTE

We sipped at Bibo in Hong Kong as an after-free-flow-brunch glass via Coravin.  A touch tired both in terms of nose (obscure veggies, no fruit) and texture (no tannins).

Reasonably pleasant, albeit uninspiring, was to end a mucho-marvie brunch.

2013 Fisher Vineyards Chardonnay The Unity

TASTING NOTE

Our last bottle sipped for first day of “birthday month” celebrations. Just a nice,  unpretentious drop.  A definite “buy” every year.

2013 Solar dos Lobos Alentejo Colheita Selecionada

TASTING NOTE

A blend of Aragonez, Touriga Nacional,  Alicante Bouschet, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah…seriously!?

Wow, the winemaker is all over the place. Why not as this is the “Solar of Wolves”…sorry for the less than perfect Google translate.

Dark-ruby red colour. We would go as far as to say thick or opaque. Mysterious?

Bouquet of dark berries with some pepper. Very thick feeling on the nose as well.

Palate is full-bodied, almost raspy tannins, with perhaps a bit too much as the finish is somewhat overwhelming.

A good wine for sure. Certainly a very interesting one. At this price, we think clearly worth a try and a place in our cellar.

2012 Roux Père & Fils Chassagne-Montrachet La Goujonne

TASTING NOTE

We were pleasantly surprised our host popped open a bottle from one of our favourite producers in Burgundy.  Very nice people making very good to excellent wines, Roux Pere & Fils offers excellent QPR.

We were a bit surprised to notice this was a Chassagne-Montrachet as we initially thought Chablis.  A lot of lemon and wet stone like sensations on the nose.  Virtually no oak.

The palate was fresh, crispy and alive, but with little complexity. Pleasant sip, particularly after we decided to chill it a tad more than we usually like, but one we would not buy.  Interesting experience.

2009 Château Grand-Puy Ducasse

TASTING NOTE

Our friend popped open this barely legal, but sipping nicely “claret” as the first of two Pauillacs of the evening.

Ruby red with darker, purple like shadows. Bouquet of red, candy like syrup with liquorice and hints of toasty-oak and slight vegetation.

Palate of fairly straightforward Pauillac “claret”….very good, but not special. Very subtle (too subtle, you ask?) tannins.

Reasonably priced, good Pauillac. Perhaps she will show her true self circa 2020?

2008 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste

TASTING NOTE

The second “claret” of the evening from Pauillac.

A fairly typical blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Dark ruby red colour. Nose of slightly ripe, black fruits with a touch of spice and pepper.

Palate experiences dark berries, some coffee, touch of chocolate and well-represented tannins. A reasonably pleasant blend of power and elegance. We definitely enjoyed the drop, but wondered out-loud if another four years or so would have done her more justice.
