Château Léoville-Poyferré – Winery Visit

To say the entrance of Château Léoville-Poyferré, which has a glass window displaying the grandeur of the cellar, is impressive would be a British Euphemism on steroids.  A Northern France family (Cuvelier) has owned since 1920.  Four kids, two sons so likely to remain in the family for many generations.

Started in 1638 and was the largest domaine at that time in the St. Julien appellation.   Recognised as a Second Growth in the Grand Cru Classe en 1855.  Mr Barton bought part of the domaine, thus Leoville Barton.  A Poyferre married into the family, thus Leoville Poyferre. Other part was Leoville Las Cases. They now share the same facilities, but different staff, etc. All three Leovilles are Second Growth Grand Cru Class en 1855.  Probably by accident, but one heck of a way to take “Leoville” from one to three Second Growths!

They seem to do a lot of testing on various aspects of improving their wines.  They replaced wooden vats in 1995 to 1998 with stainless steel. Continue reading Château Léoville-Poyferré – Winery Visit

Chateau Beychevelle – Winery Visit

We visited Château Beychevelle several years ago during one of several visits to Bordeaux.  A beautiful winery, with a stunning Château and gardens, in the Saint-Julien appellation – arguably our favourite area – Château Beychevelle was classified as one of ten Fourth Growths in the Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855 (during the reign of Emperor Napoleon III).  The Château also makes a second label wine called Amiral de Beychevelle.  As an aside, with the exception of elevating Chateau Mouton-Rothschild in 1973 from a Second Growth to a  First Growth and adding Cantermerle as a Fifth Grown in 1856, nothing has changed with this classification system that was based on a château’s reputation and trading price.  Always an interesting conversation starter at boring cocktail parties. A Léoville-Poyferré

Ciel, Poyferré, ta beauté m’a surpris,

Fieuzal

Graves, plein d’allégresse,
Source de vie, de jeunesse,
Toi, Fieuzal, fier cavalier
Du Domaine de Chevalier,
Que j’adore ta présence,
Que j’admire ton élégance!

Quand le ciel est sombre et noir,
Dans le pire des désespoirs,
Tu me consoles, Fieuzal,

Clinet

Quand je m’incline devant toi,
Je te sens, Clinet, douce haleine,
Qui me console de tant de peines
Me rend chaleur, au pire des froids.

Quand je me penche vers toi,

Chateau Haut Brion – Winery Visit

We attended the Sotheby’s Haut-Brion Ex Chateau auction and, well, bought more wine than we had planned…but, hey, how often do you get a chance to acquire some of the best Bordeaux in the world directly from the Chateau!?  Provenance perfect!

Not surprisingly, we considered a tour of Chateau Haut-Brion a MUST when we were planning to visit Bordeaux.

Our request to visit our favourite “First Growth” was met with an unexpected offer of a private tour followed by lunch with the Estate Manager, Jean-Philippe Delmas, who is the third generation of his family to be responsible for running this historical chateau. Wow, wow, wow!!!

Our visit more than exceeded our expectations as the tour – especially visiting the private library of cook books dating back hundreds of years – was indeed private (we were not joined with the big groups), and the two hour lunch was special from A to Z!!!

Wine Lovers take note…this visit was Wine Nirvana!!! Continue reading Chateau Haut Brion – Winery Visit
